New York City FC today announced that Anton Tinnerholm has agreed to a new multi-year contract with the Club.
The Swedish right back arrived from Malmo FF ahead of the 2018 season and quickly cemented his status as one of the league’s best defenders. He’s started over 60 games across all competitions totaling five goals and 13 assists since his arrival.
Tinnerholm said: “Extending my contract with NYCFC is the one thing I really wanted to do and it was a simple choice. Since the very first game last season, I’ve felt New York is the place to be and NYCFC is the Club to be at. When you’re enjoying your life and career so much, there’s been no doubt for me that I wanted to re-sign here.
“From the start I’ve felt like this is a second home for me. All the guys on the team and the staff around the Club welcomed me in a really good way. I fit into the team very well and I’ve felt this is a place where I really want to stay. This team can achieve a lot and I really want to do something special this year and in the next few years as well.”
The Swede’s extension continues to lock in a core group of players to long-term deals. Last year, Alex Callens, Maxime Chanot, Sean Johnson and captain Alex Ring all committed their futures to New York City.
NYCFC Sporting Director Claudio Reyna said: “We’re excited to extend Anton’s contract and keep him at NYCFC during the prime of his career. He’s been a fantastic addition to the team and his success on the field from day one speaks for itself.
“Anton continues to provide a strong presence in the locker room and his commitment to the Club off the field has been first class.
“With this contract extension, we feel we’re locking down one of the best right backs in the league for the next few years and it’s a great day for the Club.”
Tinnerholm was recognized as NYCFC’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2018. In his debut season, the Swedish international played in and started 31 league matches scoring four goals and assisting six times. The goal and assist tallies were good enough for top three in the league for defenders in both categories.
NYCFC head coach Domènec Torrent said: “Anton is a player who brings many qualities to our Club. He has a strong passion for the game and gives everything he has for NYCFC. He fights every single moment of the match and is an important part of the heart of this team. Having him here for the next few years is amazing for the Club and he will continue to be a special player that our fans will love.”
The right-back instantly became a fan favorite in his first month of game action with his thunderous volleys against the Los Angeles Galaxy and San Jose Earthquakes earning him the nickname “Tinnerboom.”
Tinnerholm said: “The fans have supported me from the very start and I’ve appreciated every moment so far. We have the chance to do something big together and if they’re behind us, that’s the 12th player on the pitch, so let’s do something big this year together.”
